I honestly thought this movie wouldn’t live up to the hype of being one of the best movies ever made. This movie is A!M!A!Z!I!N!G! It’s hypnotising! Once I started watching it, I was sad that there was an intermission halfway through this movie, but, that intermission is needed, because even without the intermission, the movie is 221 minutes long. Yes, 3 hours and 40 minutes! This one was 3 hours and 53 minutes!
I loved every minute of this movie. I didn’t want it to end. I never felt bored, never dragged despite it’s lengthy runtime because the story is so investing and you really do care about the characters. Not to mention some of the best musical scores ever composed for a movie and how colorful this movie looks and how it’s technically flawlessly filmed. You get gorgeous wide-angle, almost panoramic shots. Really beautiful camera work. This movie has won 8 oscars: best picture, best director, best screenplay, best actress, best supporting actress, best cinematography, best film editing and best art direction. Also, Clark Gable should have won an oscar for best actor. He only got an oscar nomination. This is also the #1 highest-grossing movie of all time when it comes to box-office revenue. As of 2019 adjusted for inflation it made $ 3,713,000,000! Yes, that’s not a typo! $3,7 billion! BILLION! So, safe to say, no movie will ever beat that.
So, I got completely carried away and forgot to talk about the plot and story of this movie. Scarlett O’Hara (played magnificently by the beautiful Vivien Leigh – yes, I admit, I have a bit of a crush on her) is a woman who can deal with the civil war, Atlanta burning to the ground, the army taking away everything from her. She is beautiful, very popular, she has vitality, but Ashley, the man she wanted to marry, is going to marry his cousin, Melanie. Scarlett is warned by her mom to behave herself at the party at Twelve Oaks plantation. But there is somebody else there that day, the day the Civil War begins. Rhett Butler, played by Clark Gable who I said earlier was robbed off his oscar. He really deserved to have it. Scarlett does not know he is in the room when she begs Ashley to marry her instead of Melanie. And from there on out, this movie gets interesting. Knowing that the rich and red soil of Tara, the cotton plantation is the only thing worth fighting for, she will do everything control her destiny even if means marrying the wrong men to maintain her social status. But death follows her every step of the way as she swears never to be poor again, standing on the ashes of her home, Rhett Butler offers her a way out. However, love is delicate and elusive, and that’s where things get really bad for her. You really feel sorry for her after everything she’s lived through. This movie really beats you over the head with sad moments throughout it’s runtime, especially the last hour of this movie. I have never ever rooted for a main character to get a happy ending in a movie this much. The way this movie unfolds you’re constantly thinking that her hopes for a better future have gone with the wind. Sorry for the pun. I just had to
Guys, do you really think I was going to give this movie any other grade than a 10/10* after giving it this many praises? Go see this movie, it really is worth 4 hours of your life. This will be the best 4 hours you ever spent in your life. You might be put off by the acting when compared to today, but, honestly, it didn’t bother me at all.
