Life Is Beautiful (1997) Movie Review - Quick Movie Reviews by Haris

Ok, time to review a movie… What movie should we choose to review today? How about a 1990’s movie from my DVD collection? Yup, let’s do that! This is a foreign movie that has won many awards, a movie that is romantic, funny, tragic and heartwarming at the same time. A movie that has won oscars for best actor, best music and best foreign movie at the 1998 oscars. It also got nominated for best director, best editing, best picture and best original screenplay that year. It also won countless other awards from film festival. It would be pointless to name them all. I am of course talking about the 1997 Roberto Benigni masterpiece! 🙂

La vita é bella (Life is beautiful)

This is a movie that you’ll never be able to get out of your head. It really is that good. I was first introduced to this movie when I was 10 or 11. We were in school and the history teacher said: ”Well, since we’re on the topic of WW II in our books now, I will let you watch a movie that’s set during that time period”. At that time, I didn’t really like this movie that much but as I grew older, this has become one of my all-time favorite movies. It’s been so many years since I last watched this movie and rewatching it today, I was blown away. I don’t know why, but I appreciated it the most this time. Maybe it’s because I have become more serious about watching movies and reviewing them. Well, shit, this is already becoming a long post, but, fuck it, this movie deserves the longest damn post I will ever write on this page. The acting here is fantastic from everybody involved, especially Roberto Benigni who deservedly won the oscar for best actor in this movie. And he directed it. His wife in this movie who is also his real-life wife and appears in most of his movies, Nicoletta Braschi is also great in this movie. And I gotta praise the child actor who portrayed Giosué in the movie, Giorgio Cantarini. He was only 5 years old when this movie came out. And, for a 5-year old, he really gave a great performance as well.

Ok, let’s get to the plot of this movie. So, the main character of this movie is Guido, a charming man with a child’s innocence and his big dreams of opening his own book store. We begin this movie in 1939 where Guido arrives to a Tuscany town of Arezzo with his friend and poet Ferruccio. There he meets Dora, a young and beautiful teacher and he calls her ”Princess”. Unfortunately for him, she is engaged to a state official who is kind of a dick. He already had an unpleasant encounter with Guido. But that doesn’t stop Guido from pursuing Dora multiple times and this starts the fairytale romance between them. Five years later they have a son and Guido finally opens the book store that he always dreamed of. But that’s when shit hits the fan. Guido and his son are taken away by fascists onto a train to get them to a concentration camp three months before the end of WW II. Dora finds out about this and willingly gets on the same train as them. In the concentration camp, Guido must use all his incredible imagination and his tireless spirit to save his loved ones and himself.

If you haven’t watched this incredible movie, why haven’t you? What the fuck have you been doing with your life? Go see this movie. I can’t praise it enough. This is for me a flawless movie. I will for sure watch it at least once more this year. This is also a movie that I would love to see in theatres one day. A retro movie day at the cinema. That would be amazing. This movie deserves to be seen on the biggest screen possible and in the biggest crowd possible. MOVIE THEATRES! MAKE IT HAPPEN! I’m giving this movie a 10/10*, of course. What else would I give it? Actually I give it 30/30*! 10/10* for quality, 10/10* for entertainment and 10/10* for rewatchability. Now, you may be thinking: ”This guy has lost his mind or something”, but, I assure you, maybe I’ve lost it a little bit, but, honestly, I’m just super excited when I see a really good movie like this. Again, go see it if you haven’t. You can’t NOT love this movie. Thank me later 🙂
