George Clooney
Shailene Woodley

Caught this one in another private screening and was not disappointed. The film follows Matt King as he tries to cope with his wife's coma after a boating accident and how to raise his daughters. The story starts out a bit slow, but the film really picks up as the characters begin to learn more about who they really are and what life means to them. There are a few laugh out loud moments, especially when the daughters start cursing.

While the film and story itself are pretty good, the thing that really carries the film and kept me intrigued was the performance of the two leads: George Clooney and Shailene Woodley. Clooney's calm voice as the narrator and his simple delivery really make his character believable and as he begins to really understand what is going on he delivers an emotional punch. However, by far my favorite performance in the movie is delivered by Shailene Woodley, Clooney's wild daughter Alexandra. In spite of the fact that she is starring aside the well traveled highly acclaimed Clooney, she more than holds her own and gives a few punch-in-the-gut moments that are unexpected. The fact that she has to be in practically constant state of shock and emotional breakdown are pretty incredible as every moment seems completely believable.

Finally, the soundtrack is excellent and all of the local Hawaiian music fits in perfect with the film and the location.

My Conclusion:

Must see, even if you're going to it alone. The performances by the two leads carry the film.
