Argylle (2024) Movie Review

Argylle (2024) - Movie Review - Quick Movie Reviews by Haris

When the plots of reclusive author Elly Conway’s fictional espionage novels begin to mirror the covert actions of a real-life spy organization, quiet evenings at home become a thing of the past. Accompanied by her cat Alfie and Aiden, a cat-allergic spy, Elly races across the world to stay one step ahead of the killers as the line between Conway’s fictional world and her real one begins to blur.

A spy action comedy movie lovingly making fun of the spy genre while also having fun over the top action and lots and lots of twists and turns. This movie was just pure fun from start to finish. The many plot twists can get tiring, but, in a good way. I didn’t mind them. I appreciated every single one of them.

Matthew Vaughn has done it once again. Very few directors do action and stunts well these days. Matthew Vaughn is one of those few directors. And also, gotta congratulate the stunt team for the work on this movie. Some of the stunts looked super painful.

This movie is worth seeing just for the big names attached to it alone. Henry Cavill, Sam Rockwell, Samuel L. Jackson, Bryce Dallas Howard, just to name a few. The one that stood at the most to me was Sam Rockwell. Never really saw him as an action star, but, he blew me away in this movie.

And Henry Cavill could pull off James Bond really, really well. Maybe one day. Speaking of Henry Cavill, I couldn’t help but laugh in this movie, because, he reminded of John Travolta in the 1996 movie Broken Arrow. What was this haircut? 😂

Catherine O’Hara… Nice to see her again. She had a lot more screentime than I expected and I also didn’t expect the direction her character was going to go in this movie. Kind of took me off guard. Samuel L. Jackson, great as always… Bryce Dallas Howard is charming and pretty good in some emotional scenes and sometimes her action scenes are convincing and sometimes they aren’t. Overall, I’d say she did really good in this one. One last positive, Alfie the cat!

As far as negatives go in this movie, I have a couple. Not any major ones, although the CGI sometimes is hilariously obvious. Honestly some shots felt like early 2000’s CGI, I’m not even kidding. Another thing I didn’t like about this movie was Bryan Cranston. Not him personally. I love him in everything he’s in, he’s one of the most likeable actors for me, but, didn’t like the way his character was written. Also another actor I have nothing against, but, am kind of sick of seeing everywhere, it’s John Cena. I like him, but, he’s just doing way too many movies at this point.

Overall, I really liked this movie. It was a fun ride and I’m giving it 7.5/10*! 🙂
